Factors of Obesity & Weight Loss:

When a person consumes more calories than they use regularly over time, Obesity can occur. The fine balance between calories taken in and calories expeneded outwards, varies from each individual.

Factors that may affect a person’s weight include: genetic makeup, overeating, eating high-fat foods, and not maintaining an appropriate level of physical activity.

Obesity increases a person’s risk of: diabetes, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, and some cancers. If a person has obesity, losing five to 10 percent of their weight may delay or even prevent some of these diseases!

Body Mass Index, or BMI, is used as a screening tool for overweight or obesity.


How is Obesity Defined?

A person is overweight if their BMI is above 25.

Obesity is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more.

Class 1 obesity means a BMI of 30 to 35, Class 2 obesity is a BMI of 35 to 40, and Class 3 obesity is a BMI of 40 or more.

Classes 2 and 3, are in fact, known as severe obesity, and are hard to treat with diet and exercise alone.

The WHO Obesity designations are as follows:

Grade 1 overweight ( Overweight) – BMI of 25-29.9 kg/m2

Grade 2 overweight (Obesity) – BMI of 30-39.9 kg/m2

Grade 3 overweight (Morbid obesity) – BMI ≥40 kg/m2

At an individual level, BMI can be used as a screening tool but is not diagnostic of the body fatness or the health of an individual.
